Plante vivace de 20-60 cm, pulvérulente, inodore, à souche épaisse; tiges dressées ou ascendantes, presque simples, feuillées;
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Murs et chemins près des habitations, dans presque toute la France; nul dans la plaine méditerranéenne; Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe; Sibérie; Amérique boréale.

A rather robust perennial with many erect or straggling stems 23-50 cm high, growing from a thick, woody stock.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is found commonly near farm buildings, on roadsides and waste places near habitations. A common garden vegetable in the Middle Ages.

Fleurs : glomérules verdâtres, en grappe spiciforme nue, feuillée seulement à la base ; terminale de chaque glomérule à 5 étamines et à graine horizontale, les autres à 2-3 étamines et à graine verticale; périanthe cachant incomplètement le fruit; style très long
